Huawei said it shipped over 200 million smartphones this year, boosted mainly by its P20, Honor 10 and Mate 20 series, Cnet reported. Shipments last year were at 153 million. “In the global smartphone market, Huawei has gone from being dismissed as a statistical ‘other’ to ranking among the Top 3 players in the world,” Huawei said in a statement.
The company has experienced serious setbacks this year, with the US saying the company’s products pose a security risk, prompting many US companies to drop its phones or equipment and the recent arrest of its CFO for violating US trade sanctions. Deutsche Teleckom has said it will also be reviewing its strategy regarding Huawei. Still, Huawei remains popular in places like China and Europe. The company said that over 500 million people in over 170 countries use its phones.
The company passed 100 million smartphones shipped in July and said it wanted to reach 200 million by year end and become the world’s largest phone vendor by the end of 2019.
