Kolkata: Reliance Jio Infocomm added a whopping 8.3 million customers in January, taking its market share well past 14%, while rival incumbents Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India and Idea Cellular registered far more modest customer gains of 1.5 million, 1.28 million and 1.14 million respectively amid continuing price wars.

Newcomer Jio continued its steady climb in terms of customer market share, taking it to 14.62%, up from 13.71% in December, 13.08% in November, 12.39% in October and 11.72% in September, as per data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) on Friday.

Bharti Airtel, however, continued to remain India’s biggest phone company with 291.61 million customers, while Mukesh Ambani-led Jio’s subscriber base has swelled to 168.39 million, end-January. Second-largest carrier, Vodafone India’s customer base stood at 213.81 million and No 3 carrier, Idea’s was at 197.64 million.

Trai data showed Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India and Idea registered modest market share gains end-January to 25.32% (24.85%), 18.56% (18.20%) and 17.16% (16.83%) respectively over the previous month.

State-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) reported a most 0.39 million customer adds in January, taking its market share to 9.4% from 9.24% in the previous month.

Reliance Communications continued to lose customers, over a whopping 21.1 million in January 2018, following its announcement last October that it would be switching off its 2G and 3G wireless operations and run a non-mobile business.

Visitor Location Register (VLR), a key metric reflecting the number of active subscribers on a mobile network, indicated that 107.21% of users were active for Airtel, 94.56% for Vodafone India, 103.76% for Idea and 82.10% for Reliance Jio.

Data collated by the telecom regulator showed that the total base of phone subscribers fell to 1,175.01 million in end-January from 1190.67 million in end-December 2017, reflecting a 1.32% monthly decline.
